Localizing Your Landing Page and App Store Listing for Japan
By Appnics · Updated · 2 min read
Your ads can be perfect and still fail if the page they lead to does not feel right to a Japanese customer. Landing pages and App Store listings are where the decision happens, and Japanese customers bring different expectations to them.
This guide covers what to change when you localize a landing page or an App Store listing for Japan, beyond translating the words.
Write for Japanese readers, do not translate
Direct translation usually sounds stiff or slightly off, and Japanese readers notice immediately. Copy should be written, or rewritten, by a native writer who understands your product, with a level of politeness that fits your brand and category.
Headlines that work in English often need to change completely. Japanese copy tends to state the benefit and the reason to believe it more explicitly, and it often uses short, concrete phrases rather than abstract slogans.
Design conventions and page structure
Japanese landing pages are often longer and more information-dense than their Western counterparts. Customers expect to find detailed explanations, comparisons, step-by-step usage, FAQs and plenty of reviews before they commit. A minimal page that works in the US can feel like it is hiding something.
Mobile matters most. Many Japanese customers will see your page on a smartphone, arriving from LINE, Instagram or X, so design and test the mobile version first.
Trust signals Japanese customers look for
Add the details that reassure Japanese customers:
- Reviews and creator content from Japanese users
- Company information, including who operates the service in Japan
- A support contact that answers in Japanese
- Clear shipping, returns and cancellation policies
- The legally required seller information for online sales in Japan
Pricing and payments
Show prices in yen with consumption tax included, as Japanese customers expect. Offer familiar payment methods: credit cards are common, but many customers also use options such as convenience store payment, carrier billing or popular QR code payment apps. Delivery times and costs should be visible before checkout.
Localizing your App Store listing
The iPhone has an unusually large share of the smartphone market in Japan, which makes the App Store listing especially important. Localize the app name and subtitle where it makes sense, rewrite the description for Japanese readers and research Japanese keywords, which often differ from direct translations of your English ones.
Screenshots carry most of the weight. Replace English captions with Japanese copy written for the screenshot format, and show the app in a Japanese context where you can. Then treat the listing as something to test and improve, just like a landing page.
Measure everything from day one
Set up analytics and conversion tracking before you spend on ads, so you can see which channels, creators and messages bring customers who actually buy or subscribe. Without this, it is impossible to tell whether a weak result comes from the ads or from the page.
